Using Food as Medicine

You need to eat anyway.  Why not make it something that will help you regain or retain your health?  Below you will find some of the most common recipes that I use to assist people in my practice.

Golden Milk

Turmeric Paste:

1/4 cup of organic turmeric powder

1/2 cup of water

Cook over medium heat in a saucepan until a thick paste forms.  Cool and store in a glass container in the refrigerator.

1 cup of milk (you can substitute almond, coconut, or rice milk if desired)

1/2 teaspoon turmeric paste

1/2 teaspoon coconut oil

honey to taste

Heat together in the saucepan until just before it boils.  Froth if desired.  Sprinkle with some fresh ground pepper, some true cinnamon and a bit of nutmeg.  Enjoy!

Turmeric is one of the most prized medicinal foods there is around the world.  It has immune stimulating properties, is a potent anti-inflammatory and is high in antioxidants.  If you have any condition that ends in "itis" like colitis, or gingivitis, you have an inflammatory condition.  Turmeric can help cool the inflammation and bring relief.

Therapeutic doses of turmeric for acute conditions is usually around 4 Tbs. a day which sounds like a lot, but you can drink it in Golden Milk and cook with it as ways of getting it in.  Tumeric smoothies are also a tasty way of getting tumeric down.  However, the best ways are to heat it and combine it with fat (like coconut oil) and piperine from black pepper like the Golden Milk recipe does in order to help your body absorb it best.

How to Make Traditional
Yogi Tea

Yogi Tea is like a traditional Indian chai, but with higher, more medicinal levels of the herbs and spices in it and less black tea.  It's a warming, calming combination that increases circulation in the body, enhances digestion, and pumps up the immune system.  Watch the video to the left with one of my favorite teachers, Karta Purkh Khalsa, for more information on the benefits of this tea and how to make it.

Ingredients for 4 cups of tea:

10 cups of water -- Bring to a boil with

2 cinnamon sticks

16 cardamon pods

24 black pepper corns

12 whole cloves

4 slices of fresh ginger

After it comes to a boil, reduce heat and let simmer for 20-3- minutes.

Add 1 teaspoon of black tea and let steep for several minutes.  Add 2 cups of milk and turn up heat and heat through til it *almost* comes to a boil.  Remove from heat when it starts to froth up.  Strain and drink.  Serve with a bit of honey if desired.
