Are You at Risk for Heart Disease?

Heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Canada. Are you at risk?

There are risks you can’t control.

  • If an immediate family member, such as a parent or sibling, has a heart attack, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure, then you have a higher risk of heart disease.

  • The older you are the greater your risk of heart disease, especially men over the age of 45 and post-menopausal women or those who are over 55.

Nine in ten Canadians over the age of 20 have at least one risk factor for heart disease.

There are risks you can control.

  • Smoking

  • Lack of exercise

  • Unhealthy diet

  • Overweight

  • High blood pressure

  • Diabetes

  • Stress

Aboriginals and other ethnic groups such as South Asians are at an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases like heart disease and stroke.

Statistically

  • About 1 in 12 (or 2.4 million) Canadian adults age 20 and over live with diagnosed heart disease. (2012/13 data Public Health Agency of Canada’s Chronic Disease Surveillance System)

  • Every hour, about 12 Canadians over the age of 20 diagnosed with heart disease die.

  • The death rate is 6 times higher among adults age 40 and over with diagnosed heart failure compared to those without.

Did you know?

The early detection and management of medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol can help you reduce your risk of heart disease.

What is Cardiovascular Screening?

With each beat of your heart a pulsewave is radiated down the linings of your arteries to your fingers and toes and then back to your heart. j This is what we measure. This non-invasive screening provides fast, accurate results that reliably predict your risk of heart attack and stroke.

At Kinesionics Integrative Healthcare we do cardiovascular screening with a Meridian Digital Pulsewave Analyzer (DPA). This device measure arterial stiffness and stress by tracking the way blood moves through the arteries and veins. Using infrared light sent through a non-invasive fingertip probe, the DPA obtains pulse wave information with the light absorbing characteristics of Hemoglobin (the Hb02 of arterial blood). The medical terminology for this measurement method is Plethysmogram (PTG).

Are you at risk for a heart attack or stroke?

Aging and disease can alter the physical characteristics of blood vessel walls and impair the pulsatile function of arteries. The DPA provides information on arterial wall stiffness and determines the biological age of arteries in less than 3 minutes. The use of the Meridian Digital Pulse Analyzer is well established and supported by extensive medical study and as a result has received FDA and Health Canada approval.

In 15 minutes you can have a complete cardiovascular system screening done outlining your risk factor for heart attack or stroke and enabling you to take preventative action. You can also verify if your supplement program and medications are helping.
